Help! My iPad’s Face ID Is Not Working

Face ID is a convenient way to protect your iPad device while you are away, and it allows you to log into different services and apps with a simple look at your device. While this is a convenient and amazing technology, it does have its own issues at times, and you may find that your iPad’s Face Id stops working or fails to unlock your device – even when you are looking right at it! Fortunately, the issue is usually something simple and can be fixed right from the comfort of your own home or office.

Face ID Isn’t Working – What Should I Do?

Check out the troubleshooting steps below.

Turn on Face ID. While it may seem obvious that Face ID should be turned on to work, sometimes it does get turned off at times. Fortunately, this is an easy fix and will only take you a couple of minutes to do. Simply open the settings app and then click on Face ID and passcode. You will need to enter your passcode if prompted. Turn on Face ID and make sure that it is turned on for any of the services and applications that you want it to be used for. For example, you can turn Face ID on to unlock the device and make purchases or turn it off for password auto filling.

Should you continue to struggle with your Face ID working after this, you have two options. First, you can set up an alternative appearance. If you have made any changes to your appearance such as removing facial hair, getting glasses, or getting a haircut, this feature is perfect for you. Simply follow the same steps you did to check and see if Face ID is turned on but this time, click the option to set up an alternate appearance.

The other option is to reset your Face ID. Simply click the prompt to do so and follow the steps as provided on the screen.

Look at the camera directly. Sometimes, it is easy to just grab the phone and look quickly at it but when doing this, Face ID may not be able to pick up on your facial features to unlock your phone. To ensure that Face ID works for you, try these things:

  • If you do not normally wear glasses, take them off (for example sunglasses)
  • Make certain your mouth, nose, and eyes are visible and not obstructed
  • Remove any masks unless you have set up your appearance with a mask on

Ensure the Face ID camera is clear from obstruction. The Face ID camera is important as it works to recognize your face. If this camera is blocked or obstructed, a clear view of your face will not be visible, and your Face ID may fail to recognize you or unlock your device. The entire Face ID camera notch must be clear.

Restart your device. A quick reboot to your device may be all that is needed to restart Face ID and get it working again. Simply turn off your iPad and restart it. Try again and see if this solves the problem.

Update your iPad. If restarting your device does not work, your iPad’s Face ID may need an update. Check to see if it does and if so, do it.
