How to Fix the Floating Keyboard on Your iPad

As you already know, your iPad’s keyboard is designed to appear at the bottom of the screen when you click on a text box or need to enter text. When the keyboard is not needed, it disappears from the screen. In addition to this nifty feature, the iPad sports a floating keyboard, which allows users to easily type with one hand and move the keyboard anywhere they want on the screen. Therefore, if you need to see text that is hidden by the keyboard, simply move it to somewhere convenient on the screen. You can also split the floating keyboard into two.

Many people enjoy the convenience and features of the floating keyboard but for those users who do not like it, you can avoid using it by simply switching to the default options in your settings, docking the keyboard, disabling it, or even merging it.

For those of you intrigued by this floating keyboard concept, let’s talk about what it is first. The floating keyboard is a feature on the iPad that takes your default keyboard and turns it into a smaller version of itself. The keyboard then floats over your active applications and you can position it wherever you want on the screen. Besides just moving it into a new position, you can type on it one handed, and you can even split it.

But, what happens when the floating keyboard doesn’t work right? Let’s take a look.

How Can I Fix My Floating iPad Keyboard?

If you have the floating keyboard on your device but you prefer your keyboard to remain the traditional keyboard, there are some things you can do to make this happen.

Drag it into place. You can tap on the floating keyboard and hold onto the bottom of it and drag it down onto the bottom of your iPad screen. Doing this will make it stick in place once your finger is removed from the screen.

Zoom in. If you can see a small keyboard floating around on your screen and you do not want it there, simply pinch and zoom on the keyboard to switch it back to its original size. The zoom function works just as if you were trying to zoom in on a photo. You will want to place two of your fingers on the keyboard and then spread your fingers apart to zoom in.

End the shortcuts. If you plan to use a Bluetooth keyboard or some type of external keyboard with your iPad and you notice that the floating keyboard continues to appear, you may have to adjust your settings. To do this, you should navigate to the settings, click general, and then click on the keyboard and all keyboards. You will then need to turn off the predictive options and shortcuts.

Merge the split keyboard. A split keyboard is not ideal for everyone and if you are frustrated with it, you can merge it together. To do so, tap onto a text field so that both halves appear on your screen. When they do, touch, and hold the keyboard button on the lowest right side of one of the keyboards and click on dock and merge.

Restart your iPad. This fail safe option usually works – simply restart your iPad and see if it corrects the issue you are experiencing with your keyboard.
